Data dashboard

This dashboard of jail population data is part of Sheriff Witt’s commitment to transparency. It shows the breakdown of the total number of people in custody in the Hennepin County jail, demographic information about them, and other relevant information.

The dashboard is updated daily. The information is never more than 24 hours old.

About the data

Race and gender

Race and gender data are self-reported. We collect the data during the booking process.

Case types

Case types are internal case categories utilized by the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, which describe the nature of a person in custody’s primary or most serious charge.

Offense levels

Offense level refers to the primary or most serious charge of a person in custody. A person may have multiple charges. See the glossary for explanation of offense levels.

Charging agency

This data details the agencies responsible for charging individuals in the jail, and the number of individuals charged by each agency.

How to use the dashboard

The dashboard is interactive, meaning you can reveal additional information by hovering and clicking. When you hover over an element of a visual, a pop-up will reveal additional information related to that element. When you click an element, the entire page will filter according to that element. To filter by multiple elements, use Ctrl+Click.

Glossary

Offense level

Felony: A crime for which a sentence of imprisonment for more than one year may be imposed.

Misdemeanor: A crime for which a sentence of not more than 90 days or a fine of not more than $1,000, or both, may be imposed.

Gross misdemeanor: Any crime that is not a felony or a misdemeanor. The maximum fine that may be imposed for a gross misdemeanor is $3,000.

Probable cause: The belief that an offense has been committed and that the person arrested committed it. The facts establishing probable cause must be submitted to the Court under oath.

Case type

Person: Crimes involving an act against a person, such as robbery, assault, or acts of violence.

Property: Crimes involving the loss or diminished value of property, such as theft, burglary, or damage to property.

Weapons: Crimes specifically related to the possession of certain weapons by ineligible persons.

Drugs: Crimes pertaining to the possession and sale of controlled substances.

Domestic assault: Crimes committed by a suspect in an established relationship with the victim through either fear or physical harm.

Societal conduct: Crimes against the rules of society, including disorderly conduct, public intoxication/urination, or lewd conduct.

Criminal sexual/obscenity: Crimes against a person that are specifically sexual in nature, such as rape, sodomy, or molestation.

DWI: A specific crime related to the operation of a motorized vehicle while under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or prescription medications. This may include cars, boats, snowmobiles and ATV’s.

Holds: Legal orders from a court to detain a person to await judgement or an appearance in a court of law. This may include court order violation holds, probation and parole violations, and warrants for arrests from another jurisdiction.

Traffic: Offenses specifically related to the operation of a motor vehicle on a roadway. Typically, these issues are resolved through payable fines after a citation is issued.
